A buddy of mine, back in my college days, was in some college class, and the professor posed the class this question: “Does the political system that we are raised in affect the way that we attempt to resolve conflict?”
The class discussion grew incredibly heated: “Yes, it does!” “No, absolutely not!”
After allowing the debate to fester for some time, my friend called out, “Let’s vote on it!”
[At this point, I was laughing uncontrollably]
“…AND,” he continued, “they VOTED on it!”
[I was now reduced to utter helplessness]
“How did the vote come out?”, I asked him.
“Oh, the vote came out that, yes, the political system that you grow up in DOES affect the way that you attempt to resolve conflict.”
“See, the system works!”
[I have told this story to a large number of people over the years, and it's kind of a touchstone, because about half of the people that I tell it to say, "I don't get it," while the other half are unable to speak, because of laughing so hard.]
