Professionally:

First of all, I work for a Telecom company. We design and sell smart switches and routers. Our company is very innovative and was the first one to come up with the concept of layer 2 VLANs and ports mobility.

Personnally, I am a “Manager of Software Development”, which means that I oversee a group that creates Network Management Software.

Open-Source:

I have also been part of the open source movement for many years.

My latest projects are:

NextBBS, a feature-laden and performant Message Board System.

nWizard, an online installation and helper wizard for programers, regardless of their level of expertise.

My Web Sites:

Well, there are many of them.I used to be a web host, but that activity got absorbed by a bigger fish. You can still take a look: ReadySetHost, formerly known as Hosting Group

Free Message Boards Hosting: Clic!Dev

An Anime and Video Games Online Community: Militate

…and many more!

Well that’s it for now. Cheers.

I lifted this from Markus’ website, even though it’s originally attributed to Caterina Fake, founder of Flickr:

You don?t do good software design by committee. You do it best by having a dictator. From the user?s point of view, you must have a coherent design philosophy, and I don?t see how that could come about from open source software. The person who?s done it best is Steve Jobs, and he?s well-known for being a tyrant.

– Don Norman

Well now that’s an interesting misconception: open source software = democracy. Of course we have to remember that this is just a quote; something in essence always taken out of context.

I have made this mistake though. My first open source software was democratically developed. Well, more accurately, my very impressively sized team spent several months discussing it but I ended up being the only one coding something while all my virtual chefs would tell me where to add ingredients.

I have never made that mistake again. Open source software, to be successful, needs a strong leader, just as closed source software does. I believe that to lead a project to success, you need personality. Not necessarily a good personality, just something that will make people feel that at least the project is going somewhere.

A famous example of open source software that is *not* democracy-based is Linux. Linus Torvalds will not let you add your code to the existing kernel code base without thorough review and he will sometimes decide to reject your code based on ‘political’ reasons. It makes for interesting debates and I can think of at least a few people who went from idolizing the idea they had of Linus to squarely resenting any interaction with him. But it’s only fair: open or closed source, software development needs direction and you have to pick your own priorities: who do you wish to satisfy first? Your users or your developers?

As you may or may not know, this charming company’s business plan seem to fully revolve around the concept of IP ‘breaking and entering’.

What’s really interesting about them is that every day there’s a new surprise.

They offer two products: one is a video streaming software and ‘Gabest’ of the ‘Guliverkli‘ projects, author of the excellent Media Player Classic, is claiming that that Maui X-Stream shamelessly integrated their GPL CODECS in their ‘VX30′ product.

What’s really funny is that these guys are not even famous for this rip. The PearPC community already knew all about them: apparently, Maui X-Stream simply recompiled the open-source PowerPC emulator, added a couple bells and whistles and started selling it as ‘CherryOS’, the product of a genius programmer who coded the whole thing in 4 weeks(!)

Speaking of CherrysOS, references to that project had disappeared from their web site for quite some time now.

It would seem that we now know why: the ‘genius programmer’ is throwing the towel, according to his own blog.

Of course, it is interesting to read that, according to Honolulu-based starbullettin.com, MXS’s main problem is with jealous Mac-heads turned hackers, etc etc.

Boy, we definitely live in a ‘non reality-based’ world where everybody think that they can get away with anything.
